Join us on Friday 14th August in the Museum at 2pm, as Carl Heslop, Trustee of Grantham Museum and the chairman of the East Midlands Organ Museum, takes us for a fascinating journey into the world of the organ and one instrument’s extraordinary return home.

When the team at the East Midlands Organ Museum was offered the ex-Granada Grantham Compton Organ, Carl recognised that this important instrument should really return home to the region from which it was originally intended, from his initial contact with Grantham museum, the very first organisation that he reached out to, it was clear that this was the ideal forever home for this important part of Grantham’s musical history. As a passionate advocate for heritage, he recognises Grantham Museum as a vital community asset—somewhere that celebrates local history while offering something for everyone.

After a 53-year absence, the Compton Organ has finally returned to Grantham. For Carl, supporting not only the Organ’s installation and ongoing care but also the stewardship of the museum it now calls home felt like a natural progression.

In this engaging talk, Carl will:

Explore the history of organs in general—from the very dawn of  the organ in the age of the Roman empire to the grand cinema and symphonic organs of the 20th century.

Reveal how organs work, demystifying the pipes, mechanics, electrics, and ingenious engineering that bring them to life.

Share the unique story of the Compton Organ, its original role in Grantham, its travels, and its long-awaited return.

Whether you’re a music lover, a local history enthusiast, or simply curious about how such magnificent instruments function, this talk offers a rare opportunity to discover the artistry and innovation behind an iconic piece of Grantham’s cultural heritage.”
